Located in the heart of Futian business district, Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen is within easy reach of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, shopping malls and office towers, and is just minutes away from the Hong Kong border.

The name “Shenzhen” is derived from two hyeroglyphs, “shen” and “zhen” which mean a “deep ditch” or a “deep drain” (this is what the locals call systems or irrigation channels in flooded rice fields). The ancient name for the city is Penchen which is translated as an “Eagle City”.

Shenzhen is located 120 from the provincial capital Guangzhou. The city and its environs form one of the first Special Economic Zones of China. Starting as a small fishing village on the border with Hong Kong, over 20 Shenzhen has developed into an ultramodern city with population of 3 million.  For mainland Chinese access to the area was limited. The city boasts the highest standard of living in China.  The Shenzhen Zone hosts offices, factories, shipping facilities of companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, the US, Western European countries. Over 80% of all production is exported.  Apart from the testing ground for economic reform, Shenzhen was positioned by the Chinese authorities as a “Chinese answer to Hong Kong at the time when the issue of transferring sovereignty from the British Crown to the People’s Republic of China had not yet been completely resolved.

The city was built using modern urban planning and architectural principles – spacious airy buildings, wide green streets and boulevards with fresh air, huge shopping malls and parks.  The city and its environs have over 50 interesting sights, including the China in Miniature and the Window to the World theme parks, the Ethnic Village, the Shenzhen Aquapark, Lianghuashan Park with its famous statue of Deng Xiao Ping – the architect of Chinese reform, the Shenzhen Sculpture Park, Xianhu (the Magic Lake) Botanic Gardens, the Wild World Safari Park, Dapeng fortress, Dunshan monastery, the ancient Nantow city, etc.
